Airbus A320

SAA operated the A320 during two periods in its history. In 1991 the airline took delivery of it’s very first Airbus A320 and was the first of 7 aircraft. The first four aircraft were delivered in rapid succession in November 1991, taking 2 more August 1992, and single example in September 1992; in all 7 aircraft were operated between 1991 and 2001 when they were replaced by the Boeing 737-800. Barely a year later, in 2002 SAA ordered 15 A320s, 11 A319s and 15 A340s. The A320 order was not fulfilled, but the airline re-committed to the A320 order in July 2009, with first aircraft delivered in 2012. The A320 is set to become the backbone of SAA’s short and medium haul fleet for then next decade at least with a total of 20 due by end of 2017.
