Boeing 747-300

In 1983 SAA began operating Boeing 747-300, the stretched upper deck version. Two aircraft were brought directly from Boeing that year and were later joined, in 1995, by two former Singapore Airlines aircraft, followed by a further two aircraft acquired from Swissair in 2000. These aircraft augmented the fleet of the more modern 747-400 series aircraft on the airlines long haul routes primarily to Europe and India. By end of 2004 most of them had found new owners, but  two airframes were stored in Johannesburg seeking new owners and eventually scrapped on 2009.
